Public talk on current trends in agriculture, greenhouse gardening, hydroponics and home
gardens (“dacha” gardens) in Velikiy Novgorod, Russia.
Elena Popovich
Agricultural Scientist from Velikiy Novgorod

The head agricultural scientist of a state-sponsored greenhouse
project in Velikiy Novgorod is planning to come to Rochester to
study greenhouse agriculture, organic farming techniques and to
visit local gardens. Elena Popovich will be arriving in early May for
a two-week stay. Although Linkages is not funding the trip,
Linkages is supporting her visa application and will participate in
planning activities and visits to local agricultural operations during
her stay. Ms. Popovich is also the host of a TV gardening show in
Novgorod; on her TV show, she discusses the greenhouse project
and acts as a TV “master gardener” answering viewer questions
about gardening techniques and problems.
Ms. Popovich will be housed by a Linkages member in Rochester
who is originally from Velikiy Novgorod. Linkages has many ties to
the agricultural and gardening community locally through Joseph
Gersitz, Linkages past president, who is a certified Master
Gardener and who practices organic farming extensively in his own
“dacha” garden in his backyard. Linkages will help to organize a
comprehensive program for her to allow her as much exposure as
possible to local gardening and agricultural experts during her
stay. Her interests include greenhouse cultivation, hydroponic
farming and local fruit farms. Since her stay coincides with lilac
season and the beginning of the local growing season, she also
hopes to see the many lilac cultivars grown in Rochester. She
would also like to visit botanical and flower gardens.
Ms. Popovch has agreed speak at a public presentation for
Linkages members on trends in Russian farming techniques,
organic farming in Russia and on the role of the “dacha” garden in
Novgorod society. The presentation will be held on Monday, May
16 at 7pm at the Brighton Town Hall Auditorium, 2300
Elmwood Ave. Admission is free.
