Yarish Basket Exhibit @ High Falls

Baskets from Velikiy Novgorod at High Falls Gallery

Vladimir Yarish, a celebrated basket maker, basketry scholar and teacher in Rochester's Russian sister city, Velikiy Novgorod, is displaying 21 works at the High Falls Fine Art Gallery (60 Browns Race, Rochester, NY 14614) until December 7. The exhibit includes such traditional pieces as nesting dishes, saltcellars in the form of ducks, canisters for liquids, a necklace, and rattles. Most of the pieces are for sale.

Yarish is the master craftsman of a basketry studio in Novgorod with 40 artisan/student members. He has exhibited and taught at basketry events in Europe, Asia and in the USA. He is researching and writing about the long history of basketry in Russia and the rich native birch bark tradition; he has also assisted in historical reconstructions of artifacts from Novgorod archeological excavations.

The High Falls exhibit is cosponsored by Linkages of Rochester, a non-profit organization supporting programs with our sister city in Russia. The Gallery is open to the public free of charge Wednesdays – Fridays, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Saturdays, 12 noon - 6 p.m., and Sundays 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.(closed Mondays and Tuesdays).
